About us
The story of highside farm
Meet the team
You’re very likely to see us throughout your stay, as we’re all hands-on with the day-to-day running of the farm.
The Family
We also couldn’t do what we do without our small but mighty team – absolute heroes who go above and beyond to make sure everyone is well looked after and made to feel right at home.

Deborah
Head Housekeeper
Our resident perfectionist, Deborah ensures everything runs smoothly. Whether she’s adding the finishing touches to your accommodation or keeping things in check around the farm, she’s always on the go.

James
Head of Lettings
James looks after bookings and guest experience, making sure everything is just right for your stay. He also keeps our accommodations in top shape, so if something needs tweaking, he’s your guy.

Edward
Head of Farming
Edward takes care of the flock and oversees the daily farm operations. If you spot someone whizzing around tending to the sheep, feeding the cows, or fixing something, it’s probably him.
the real bosses
Our four-legged team rules the roost, and you’re bound to spot them (or at least hear them) during your visit.

Oscar
Head of Yapping
A big personality in a small body, Oscar makes sure no one forgets he’s here.

Bruce
Head of Mischief
Always ready with an enthusiastic greeting, Bruce never turns down a cuddle.

Stan (named after Standish)
Head of Playtime
The gentlest of the trio, Stan is happiest when he’s getting fussed over.
Passed down through generations
Over 60 Years of family history
Home to the Mawson family since 1963, Highside Farm is a traditional working sheep and beef farm, spanning 300 acres from the fells of Ullock Pike to the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. Originally a sheep farm, we later brought in cattle, and in 2003 the farmhouse got a big makeover, turning it into a B&B and opening the doors to guests for the first time.
For over 60 years, the farm has been passed down through generations of the Mawson family. First purchased by Standish and Alison, it was passed down to their son Martyn, and is now managed by his sons, James and Edward, alongside their mother, Deborah. It is not just where we work, it is where we grew up, made memories, and continue to shape its future.
Even with all the changes over the years, Highside Farm is still very much a working farm. We have around 200 sheep grazing the fells behind us, and in winter the barns are full of cattle, keeping warm from the Lake District weather. Depending on when you visit, you might even get to see lambing in action, sometimes right from your bedroom window.
Restoring the charm
putting our stamp on the place
Over the years, the farm has gathered countless memories, and every corner of the yard has a story to tell. If these walls could talk, they would have plenty of tales, though perhaps it is best they cannot to spare us a little embarrassment.
Even though the farm has been in our family for more than half a century, we feel like we are only just getting started. We have been putting our stamp on the place, restoring its original charm, adding our own little touches, and dreaming up new ideas.
One of the biggest projects so far has been transforming The Hay Barn into a wedding and event venue. Our first wedding in June 2024 was a huge moment for us. Seeing a barn that has stored hay and farm gear for centuries turn into a stunning space for people to celebrate was incredible. It just confirmed what we already knew, The Hay Barn is something special, and we cannot wait to welcome more couples in the years to come.
Welcoming family hug
A place for everyone to enjoy
Highside Farm is more than just a family home, it is a place we want others to experience and enjoy. Whether you are here for an adventure, a peaceful escape, or a special celebration, we hope you feel the same warmth and magic that we do. This farm has given us a lifetime of cherished memories, and we are excited to share that experience with you.
There is nothing better than seeing guests settle in, whether it is unwinding by the fire pit with a glass of wine, exploring the surrounding fells, or soon, celebrating in The Hay Barn. This farm has given us a lifetime of cherished memories, and we are excited to share that experience with you. We like to think of our farm as a warm, welcoming family hug.
We look forward to welcoming you to Highside Farm and being part of your own special moments.
Best wishes,
Deborah, James and Edward
