The Hay Barn is a one-of-a-kind venue set against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District’s natural beauty. With panoramic views of Bassenthwaite Lake to the front and the enchanting woodlands and towering fells of Ullock Pike and Skiddaw to the rear, it’s a place that will make your wedding day unforgettable. Dating back to 1668, this Grade II listed barn was originally used for storing hay and farming machinery. Now under restoration, with completion expected by Winter 2025, the barn retains its historic charm, featuring original stone walls and exposed wooden beams that bring warmth and character to any event.
The Hay Barn is not your typical hotel or glossy, polished venue. It’s a space full of history, where you can create a wedding day that is truly yours, infused with personal touches and set in a piece of the past.
Located in the heart of the farmyard, The Hay Barn is surrounded by charming Lakeland stone barns and cattle sheds, giving it an authentic, rural feel. Its elevated position offers sweeping views over the traditional farmhouse and the surrounding farm grounds, providing both privacy and beauty.
One of the best things about The Hay Barn is its versatility. It’s a blank canvas waiting for you to bring your vision to life. Whether you dream of a bohemian-style wedding, a rustic country-chic celebration, or a vintage-inspired affair, this space is yours to transform into something uniquely yours. From fairy lights to bunting, candles to florals, the barn allows endless possibilities for creating a magical atmosphere that reflects your style.
The barn and surrounding grounds are exclusively yours for the duration of your event, giving you the freedom to enjoy your special day in total privacy. The barn can accommodate up to 120 guests, with the option to host 31 guests in our on-site accommodations.
As you enter through the traditional double barn doors, you’ll be greeted by a truly magical space. The barn’s original character is on full display, with stunning exposed Lakeland stone walls, a vaulted ceiling, and grand wooden beams that add rustic charm and warmth. Natural light floods the space through skylights, highlighting the beauty of the barn. To the left, a spacious area offers the perfect spot for a head table or a dance floor, giving you flexibility for your reception.

Where Rustic Meets Romance
We’re thrilled about the future of The Hay Barn and the exciting additions we’re making. A Juliet balcony will overlook the farmhouse and bottom yard, perfect for enjoying the fresh air or catching the sunset. A handcrafted bar will serve local drinks, alongside all of your favourites, making it the ideal spot to mingle with guests. A beautifully lit stairway with a glass-panelled banister will lead down to the restrooms below, providing not only access to the toilets but also a route to the bottom yard for a marquee or catering vans if required. The beams and stone walls will be highlighted with spotlights and fairy lights, creating an enchanting atmosphere throughout, while ample electricity points and lighting will be available both inside and out.
Outside, we’re planning a rustic wooden canopy area with an outdoor bar for those sunny days. This space will feature comfortable seating and restored barrels, providing the perfect setting for guests to relax, enjoy their drinks, and chat the day away.
Although The Hay Barn is still under restoration, we’re excited to say that it will be ready by Winter 2025. We’re now accepting bookings for 2026 and would love to hear all about your wedding plans. Reach out to us today to start planning your dream celebration!

Guest Numbers: The Hay Barn can accommodate up to 120 guests.
Exclusive Use: For the duration of your event, The Hay Barn is exclusively yours.
Wedding License: As The Hay Barn is currently under restoration, we have not yet obtained a wedding license. However, we are actively working to secure one. If you’ve dreamed of a church wedding, there are several beautiful historic churches nearby, as well as traditional registrar offices that are just a stone’s throw away.
Timings: You can start your celebration as early as you like and enjoy it all the way through until midnight—whatever suits your plans!
DIY Approach: As a DIY venue, you’ll have full control over the details of your day. You’ll be responsible for organising all elements of your event, including:
- Tables and chairs
- Decorations and styling
- Catering
- Entertainment and music
Food: While we don’t currently have on-site catering facilities, we welcome external caterers to bring your vision to life. We’re happy to provide a list of trusted, local catering suppliers who can help make your celebration a delicious success.
Bar: Though we don’t yet have a bar license, we are working towards obtaining one. Once we’ve secured it, we’ll handle full management of the bar for your event.
Recommended Vendors: While we don’t offer event coordination or management, we’re more than happy to share a list of trusted local suppliers who can help make your wedding day exactly what you’ve envisioned.
